Steps to Obtain and Use a Burning Permit in Monroe County

Any time you burn in Monroe County, in addition to obtaining a permit, you must call 608-269-8712.

1. Get Your Free Burn Permit: Apply for a free DNR annual burn permit online at apps.dnr.wi.gov/burnpermits or by calling the Wisburn hotline at 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876).

2. Check Daily Restrictions: Each day before you plan to burn, visit apps.dnr.wi.gov/forestryapps/burnrestriction or call the hotline after 9 a.m. to check for daily burn restrictions and fire danger specific to your area.

3. Verify Local Ordinances: Before burning, always check with your local fire department or municipal officials regarding Monroe County permits or Tomah Township permits that may apply in addition to state rules.

When You Need a Permit

Burn permits are generally required for burning in DNR protection areas and when the ground is not completely snow-covered. A permit is also needed for campfires in a fire pit or ring, especially for the purpose of eliminating debris.

When You May Not Need a Permit

A permit is not required for small campfires used for warming or cooking. However, this allowance does not apply to commercial and government entities.

Important Safety Tips

Never burn under windy conditions. Ensure a garden hose or other extinguishing equipment is readily available. Always drown your ashes, stir, and add water until they are completely cold before leaving the area.
